Environmental Science Instructors (ESI):
We are seeking a few highly qualified environmental / marine science instructors to teach campers aged 10-17 at our residential science, nature, adventure camp. Daytime program includes hiking, sailing, kayaking, observation and study of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, puffins, eagles, tidal zones and the dynamic ecosystem in the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Evening program is designed to foster self-esteem and group dynamics.
You will be responsible for facilitating daytime field experiences and environmental education lessons on land and at sea in the following: marine science, geology, forest ecology, botany, oceanography, coastal / island ecology and ornithology. Our core curriculum entices the seasoned naturalist to develop fun, innovative, educational, and meaningful lessons. Your evenings are spent assisting with evening programs and developing lessons and curriculum. Completion of curriculum development projects to enhance the program is expected. Requires: related degree; experience with and enthusiasm for working with youth in an outdoor setting; demonstrated leadership, teaching and facilitation skills; confirmed knowledge of a variety of outdoor science activities and skills; familiarity with team building and group dynamics activities to foster self-esteem and cooperation among campers; desire to be a member of a shared working and living environment; strong work ethic; positive attitude; flexibility; creativity; sense of humor; CPR/ First Aid. A number of whale / sail trips, puffin trips and kayaking excursions are provided. Salary based on experience.
- Plan and facilitate daily science and adventure education program for students
- Plan and facilitate group initiatives and team building exercises
- Keep track of student journals
- Assist with planning and facilitating orientation activities at Swallowtail Lighthouse.
- Structure the time that the campers are in the field i.e. minimize the times that students can get into trouble or difficulties with each other and minimize the times that students can get injured and the situations that they can be injured in
- Provide first aid as needed for injuries
- Administer medications to the campers in your group that need it during the daytime program. Record this information in the First Aid log book
- Dispense camper money from the bank and keep track of bank balance for your students.
- Be a positive role model and mentor for campers
- Communicate with parents as requested by Directors
- Communicate with ORD’s, Directors and Coordinators on a daily basis
- Participate in travel and transportation days
- Maintain science equipment
- Responsible for set up and break down of science center as assigned
- Assist with meals occasionally facilitate meals
- Maintain personal first aid kit
- Take on one additional “guru†responsibility i.e. group pictures with names, orientation facilitation, etc…
- Help with general camp maintenance and running of store as needed
- Assist with camper supervision
- Facilitate options time programs some evenings
- Assist with evening program one night a week
- Flexibility with dissections
- Assist with big clean†days, packing and unpacking.
- Complete one summer project to enhance the program. Directors must approve project.
- Add 5 professional quality lesson plans to existing program notebooks
- Program Planning / Curriculum Development Time / Staff Meetings: Evenings. Will have some time during the summer built into the daytime schedule for curriculum development.
- Maintain and display a positive and encouraging attitude at all times

Outdoor Recreation and Dorm (ORD) Instructors:
Whale Camp, located on Grand Manan Island between Maine and Nova Scotia, is seeking a few highly qualified individuals to mentor campers aged 10-17 at our residential science, nature, adventure camp. You will be responsible for co-planning and facilitating all afternoon & evening programming on a wide variety of topics including sports, new games, campfires, and environmental science. Evening program is designed to foster self-esteem and group dynamics. Must have strong team building, group facilitation, and conflict resolution skills. In addition, job includes living with and supervising campers in a dorm and managing all aspects of dorm life. You will have free time some days from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm to explore the island while the campers are in the field. Requires: outdoor recreation background, strong leadership and organizational experience; ability to motivate others; willingness and ability to foster self-esteem, cooperation, and responsibility in campers; desire to live with and spend time with campers; creativity; patience; positive and innovative attitude; strong work ethic; flexibility; sense of humor; CPR/ First Aid. Environmental or marine science teaching background a plus. A few whale / sail trips, puffin trips and kayaking excursions are provided. Salary based on experience. Primary Programmer and Student Supervisor from 4:00 pm
Meeting, Organizational and Cleaning Tasks and Curriculum Development: 8:30 am
- Manage all aspects of dorm life: unpacking/ packing, conflict resolution, homesickness, bedtime, communications w/ parents.
- Keep dorms clean.
- Live in dorm to manage camper behavior.
- Administer medications to the campers in your dorm that need it at breakfast, dinner and before bedtime. Record this information in the First Aid log book
- Plan and facilitate evening programs: group sports, team building games, new games, art activities, night hikes, environmental debates, campfires…..
- Plan and facilitate group initiatives and team building exercises
- Assist with planning and facilitating orientation activities at Swallowtail Lighthouse.
- Structure the time with campers and manage student behaviors to maximize cooperation and minimize difficulties with each other. Structure situations to maximize safety and minimize the situations that students may be injured.
- Facilitate meals, Facilitate evening Option Time and organize signups at dinner
- Be a positive role model and mentor for campers
- Communicate with parents as requested by Directors
- Communicate with ESI’s, Directors and Coordinators on a daily basis
- Keep art supplies organized and filled
- In charge of T-shirt sorting and distribution
- Maintain personal first aid kit. Provide first aid as needed for injuries
- Dispense camper money from the bank if necessary
- Pick up and drop off mail – sell stamps to campers as needed
- Help with general camp maintenance and running of store as needed
- Participate in travel and transportation days as assigned
- Supervise “big clean†days and “packing daysâ€
- Assist with getting camper laundry ready
- Responsible for set up and break down of science center as assigned
- Complete one summer project to enhance the program. Directors must approve this project.
- Update the evening program notebook / curriculum along with the other ORD counselor.
- Off time = Approximately noon to 4:30 pm several days a week; 2 24 hour period off during the summer. Please note that due to scheduling and program needs, some of these times may change. When not off during the day, time is to be used for curriculum development.

Assistant Director/Logistics Coordinator
Whale Camp, located on Grand Manan Island between Maine and Nova Scotia, is seeking a highly qualified individual to manage the logistics and scheduling of campers and staff at our residential science, nature, adventure camp. Program includes sailing, kayaking, observation and study of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, puffins, eagles, tidal zones and the dynamic ecosystem in the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Specialty programs include adult and teacher workshops.
Experience required. Job includes overseeing and coordinating the smooth flow of day and evening programming including but not limited to: scheduling and handling the logistics of kids and staff, assist facilitating staff meetings, coordinating schedules of instructors and directors, facilitating transportation and travel days, confirming daily trips, coordinating between the staff and the kitchen, tracking and organizing participant forms and materials, running camp store. In short, you are the logistical and detail expert of the camp. Half of your day will be spent working in the office. Must have strong leadership and organizational background, computer skills, enthusiasm for working with youth and adults in an outdoor setting, ability to motivate others, demonstrated ability to facilitate group dynamics and manage staff in an outdoor camp environment. Must be flexible, willing to work long hours, creative, patient, have a positive attitude, and sense of humor. CPR/ First Aid. Minimum age 25. Room and board provided as well as a few whale / sail trips, puffin trips and kayaking excursions. Salary based on experience.
- Arrange schedule along with PD for all daily and evening programs for student and adult programs
- Coordinate trips and programs with Islanders
- Confirm all programs the morning that they occur along with PD
- Arrange day off and duty schedule for all staff
- Coordinate all programs with kitchen staff
- Coordinate teaching group lists, medical lists, housing lists and transportation lists
- Prepare travel and transportation days when needed
- Participate in travel and transportation days
- Facilitate group initiatives and team building exercises
- Assist with planning and facilitating orientation activities at Swallowtail Lighthouse.
- Facilitate all staff meetings assisting Program Director
- Communicate with parents regarding invoices, missing forms and other logistics
- Organize, maintain and update all camper forms for student and adult program
- Provide first aid as needed for injuries
- Be a positive role model and mentor for staff and campers
- Maintain personal first aid kit
- Assist with general camp maintenance
- Assist teaching with day and evening programming as needed
- Work in the office each day answering phones and doing whatever is needed
- Facilitate the operation of the store and track spending
- Oversee camper bank for each session
- Order more supplies for the store as needed
- Assist with putting kids to bed in evenings
- Off time: One day per week. When off, Program Coordinator takes daily job responsibilities
