Sample One Week Schedule - Youth and Family Programs

Day One:
Arrive from Bangor Maine; Opening session and games at Swallowtail Lighthouse peninsula; Evening: Orientation at camp; lesson and games on the parts of the sailboat, sailing and navigation.

Day Two:
Morning and Afternoon Activity - Slide show with manager of whale research station on Right Whale identification and behavior; board the 50 foot schooner D'Sonoqua; Participate in sailing and navigation of the vessel in the Bay of Fundy; Observation and tracking of whales and other marine mammals and avian species; hot chowder and sandwiches on board for lunch; oceanography research activity in afternoon; more tracking and observation of whales, marine mammals and avian species; more sailing/navigation; return to harbor. 
Evening Activity - Sand sculpture competition.

Day Three:
Morning Activity - Lesson with manager of whale research station on cetacean anatomy and physiology; Board the research boat Sea View and tour the coastline as a marine diver dives overboard with video camera; observe living animals on the sea floor; diver returns to boat with living specimens for direct observation and handling; return animals to sea floor and travel into the bay for more observation and tracking of whales and marine mammals and birds. Lunch on board; on return trip to shore, gather living plankton in plankton net and observe these life forms using field microscopes, discussion of forms of plankton and importance of plankton to life on earth.
Afternoon Activity - Choice of either hike or kayak along shoreline around Whale Cove past "Hole in the Wall" geologic formation, along cliffs of Fishhead and around Swallowtail lighthouse peninsula. Discussions of geology and fishing weirs along the way.
Evening Activity - Evening game of ultimate Frisbee on Whale Camp's beach.

Day Four:
Morning Activity - Observe songbird banding demonstration by professional ornithologist; hike to Anchorage Park and observe varieties of bird-life (i.e., bald eagles, hawks, songbirds) along the way; return to camp for hot lunch.
Afternoon Activity - Trip to Long Pond Bog to observe carnivorous plants and bog ecology; hike to Ross' Island, observation of boat graveyard and broken down lighthouse with discussions of history and folklore of Grand Manan.
Evening Activity - Sunset viewing along cliffs at Southwest Head.

Day Five:
Morning Activity - Explore smokehouses and docks of Seal Cove; Learn about the fishing industry in the Bay of Fundy; Board 50-foot boat Sea Watcher to travel to Machias Seal Island for puffin observation; one team boards the skiff to observe puffins from the water, another team goes ashore to observe puffins from land. Lunch on return trip to Grand Manan.
Afternoon Activity - Tidal Zone Research Activity, direct hands-on observation of life forms living in the zone between high and low tide, discussion of tidal zone ecology and its importance to life in the sea.
Evening Activity -
Plankton Lab and Shark Dissection.

Day Six:
Morning Activity - Visit to whale research station, tour of whale museum. Hike to explore island environments.
Afternoon Activity - Observe from shore as researchers rescue a live porpoise from a fishing weir, attach a radio tag to porpoise, set it free and monitor its' movements in the bay; Tour docks of local fishing village and talk to the fisherman about their life in the bay; tour gift shops of Grand Manan and buy lots of cool arts, crafts, and handmade sweaters for mom and dad.
Evening Activity - Campfire in field near beach.

Day Seven:
Load vans and return to Bangor Maine.
